about

Dark Spring (Cleveland, Ohio) covering Third Eye Blind's "Losing A Whole Year"

""Losing a Whole Year" may not have been the highest-charting single from Third Eye Blind's amazingly successful debut album, but its pop-friendly makeup of frolicking guitar and a welcoming tempo make it one of the band's most catchiest tunes. Coming from an album that sported such singles as "Jumper," "How's It Going to Be," and the infamous "do-do-do"-ridden "Semi-Charmed Life," "Losing a Whole Year" glistened with lyrics that were witty, humorously facetious, and figuratively brilliant. Both Kevin Cadogan and Stephan Jenkins team up to unravel their biting and somewhat sarcastic revelation of a girl who put money ahead of love and figured it could buy her happiness as well as anything she wanted, but gets an acrimonious tongue-lashing instead. The essence of the song surfaces through lines like, "But your daddy left you with no love and you touch everything with a velvet glove" and "I've seen you pop that check/Craning your neck at my car wreck." It's this in-your-face type of poetic vengeance that causes the song to harbor such an impact, but the well-placed cymbal crashes and percussion work from drummer Michael Urbano heightens the effects of the lyrics, erupting every so often behind the song's poetry. Known for their lyrical adeptness, Third Eye Blind's formula places hard-hitting vocals in between the pop/rock thrust of guitar and drums, which has lead to their success. "Losing a Whole Year" shines the spotlight on their cleverness and their unique tongue-in-cheek approach to songwriting, proving that the lyrics still make a difference." -Mike DeGagne
